Highly valued for its flexibility, 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate monomer does not sting or burn when it forms a quick film on contact with moist surfaces, making it the main component in wound closure adhesives. Forming a waterproof barrier, the bond does not crack or break after polymerization. It prevents water from reaching the wound, but allows the patient to shower within hours of application. 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate polymer degrades much slower due its longer backbone, which results in lower concentration of the cyanoacrylate polymer by-products in the surrounding tissue, which in turn, produces less inflammation and irritation. 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive provides an excellent microbial barrier against common bacterial microbes, it eliminates the need for bandages as well as the need for suture removal. Today, 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate skin adhesive glue is increasingly used by the medical industry. Called the liquid bandage, 2 Octyl glue replaces traditional sutures and at the same time acts as a protective dressing. Ensuring faster and inflammation free healing action in most cases, by forming a barrier that provides microbial protection and as long as the film remains intact, it often times achieves perfect wound closure that leaves the patient with minimal or no scaring. Before application, topical approximation of skin after surgical incision, including punctures from minimally invasive surgery, is required.
